probably the worst thing about “woke” culture is that it has allowed large groups of people to memorize phrases and buzzwords without ever using critical thinking or… any brain power at all, really. people really just repeat something they heard on Twitter or Tumblr because it sounded “smart” and “groundbreaking”. but they don’t actually take the time to examine that argument, apply it to the situation at hand, or compare and contrast.

honestly i think people get way too caught up in sounding “woke” to the point where they don’t actually care about the causes and social issues that they are talking about. They just want people to think they’re Informed, Aware, and Enlightened.

being socially aware and engaged is not a new phenomenon. and there are many, many ways to gain perspective on social issues besides the most commonly accepted forums. But no one really cares about that because being “woke” is now just a form of currency for privileged people.

That doesn’t apply to everyone of course and there are certainly lots of activists out there doing important work on social media and elsewhere, but… I really have to wonder if everyone will stick with the movement if it falls out of favour. if you can be socially conscious and aware and stick up for what’s right even when it makes you unpopular– that’s what conviction truly is.
